Meet Kitagawa Utamaro. A Japanese artist of the 18th century, he portrayed women of the Yoshiwara district, known for his woodblock pieces. He had an emphasis on his technique on light and shade, and kewari – a method that gave a true sense of realism. Utamaro challenged the current idealized beauty standards of his time as he portrayed women in exaggerated proportions of the body – elongated heads, slim necks, delicate noses that gave an unearthly thinness. His subtle and delicate work brought a sense of tranquility that pioneered a new vision of raw beauty that would eventually dominate a worldwide influence.
